Courses & Certifications

Before being able to participate in a field mission or assignment, all Explorers, Post Support Committee
Members & Advisors will have received the minimum skill training as listed.:

SARTECH III Certification (NASAR) course includes instruction on the following:

1. Introduction to Search And Rescue

2. SAR Management System

3. Land Navigation and Orienteering

4. Search And Rescue Resources

5. Search Philosophy

6. Clue Awareness

7. Search Tactics

8. Search Operations

9. Predicting Lost Person Behavior

10. Helicopter Operations

11. Communications

Wilderness First Aid (ARC) course includes instruction on the following:

1. Patient / Injury Assessment

2. Initial Care / Treatment / Stabilization

3. Patient Transportation / Extraction

4. Proper Splinting / Bandaging / Sling demonstrations

5. Treatment for: ticks & insects, cold & wet weather, rabid animals, hypothermia, heat related injuries and dehydration.

6. Knowledge of STOP (Stay, Think, Observe, Plan)

CPR certification (ARC)

1. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

2. To be renewed every year


Basic Land Navigation & Advanced Land Navigation (Post Course)

The Advisors will instruct the Explorers on everything from initial map and compass reading to translation of latitude,
longitude & UTM coordinates. In the Advanced Land Navigation Course, the Explorers will chart their own readings, pace
counts, and bearings. Completion of the Course will be by successfully finishing a multiple point course created &
observed by the Advisors under an appropriate time and weather condition setting.

Wilderness Survival – All Seasons (Post Course)

The Advisors will instruct the Explorers on basic survival skills in all four seasons – Summer, Fall, Winter & Spring. Going
through the advantages and disadvantages of each season & what can be expected. The course will be two-fold for each
season, one practical part with classroom and day training, successful completion of the phase will include an overnight
training in that particular season with designated conditions created and observed by the Advisors.

New Jersey State Law & Guidelines (Post Course)

The Advisors will instruct the Explorers on all of the correlated NJ Laws and guidelines which are important to a SAR
Organization with operational capabilities. Those items will include : The “Good Samaritan Law”; Implied consent, actual
consent & abandonment; Crime scene protection/preservation; Confirmation of death; Right to emergency assistance and
duties to provide emergency assistance; Civil suits and criminal actions; Standards of care; Confidentiality
